19 - Ossuary memorial column

This tall column contains the ashes of the unidentified victims of the massacre in Oradour-sur-Glane on 10 June 1944.
The monument was financed by one of the survivors who lost his entire family in the massacre; it was paid for by donations.
Originally, the remains were to be placed in a crypt that was built by the State, but the families of the survivors rejected this plan after a trial in 1953 in which the convicted perpetrators were granted amnesty....

Sixty-nine years ago today....

"The convicted perpetrators were granted amnesty" !!!!!!!! No way!
I agree, a crypt would hide them all away. I like the tall monument

An excellent presentation of this fine memorial.

I don't blame them for rejecting the government's proposed crypt. The grant of amnesty was a 'crime' in itself. The column is a fine tribute. My they all rest in peace. V
