Xi'an in northwest China, present population ca. 6 million, is one of China's oldest cities. Once known as Chang'an, it was capital of China's earliest dynasties and formed the easternmost terminus of the Silk Road trade routes. Its main drawcard is the Tomb of the Terracotta Warriors, plus the downtown Muslim Quarter, a legacy of the ancient trade routes, retains its distinct character amidst what otherwise may seem just another large, grey modern-day metropolis.
