Wien hat Kultur - Vienna's got culture!

How many classical orchestra companies can a one medium-sized city support? In Vienna, five. And how many productions can one opera house stage successfully in a year? In Vienna the Staatsoper (State Opera) mounts 300 - or one a night for the entire ten-month season.

Here are some impressions from a whirlwind week spent in Vienna in June 2017, hosted by a local couple, well-placed in artistic and cultural circles, on a home exchange basis. The week kicked off with the Life Ball AIDS charity benefit, a cabaret-themed sound-and-light spectacle staged against the floodlit backdrop of Vienna's venerable Rathaus or City Hall.
