Our first visit in 2004 was just an overnight stop on our way to London. The city was magically dusted with snow. Then, three more visits - 2012, 2015 and 2017. A glorious city with much to see in our three days ... history, art, music and grand architecture. Mozart lived in many places in Vienna, Schubert, Beethoven and J S Strauss also. Concerts featuring their work and that of others are held in various venues almost every day. The Museum Quarter abounds with galleries and exhibitions. Read about Sisi, the reluctant Empress Elisabeth of Austria and the legacies of her life and times in Philip's blog.
"Few cities in the world glide so effortlessly between the present and the past like Vienna. Its splendid historical face is easily recognised: grand imperial palaces and fantastic baroque interiors, museums flanking magnificent squares," LP.
A repeat visit in September 2015 and back to the same area of Mariahilferstrasse to stay - close to most of the main attractions, the Ringstrasse tram and U Bahn stations. Vienna is a mighty mix of superbly ornate period Baroque, Belle Epoque and Jugendstil and bold daring modern style, wide avenues, grandeur, cobbled lanes and small detail..
We are using Vienna as a base to explore closeby reaches of the River Danube - see other galleries.
It is always a pleasure to return to a city previously visited and filled with happy memories. There is the delight of seeing familiar sights and discovering new areas and changes.
Vienna is filled with breath-taking Baroque and Rococco architecture and decor of the glorious days of Empire. There are wide boulevards and small cobbled side streets, parklands and beautiful gardens and culture and the arts at every turn.
A door to door shuttle car brought us from Cesky Krumlov in the Czech republic, to our exchange apartment in a very beautiful and central area of Vienna. We are now luxury apartment dwellers for just over a week, in 2017.
"This nostalgic city with a streak of gentle hopefulness, where Freud discovered sex, Baroque Vienna knows that an illusion which makes you happy is better than a reality which makes you sad." - Alan Whicker, London 1980
