A day out in the historic gold rush township of Maldon, northwest of Melbourne, which sprang up on the goldfields in the 1850s. As many as 30,000 diggers arrived in 1854 to exploit the alluvial or surface gold deposits, which were depleted within a year. By 1863 the town's population had fallen away to 7,000.
