Kharkhorin, ancient Karakorum

The 16th-century Erdene Zuu Khiid (Hundred Treasures Monastery) was Mongolia's first Buddhist monastery in the modern-day town of Kharkhorin. Kharkhorin is the site of ancient Karakorum, the 13th-century Mongol capital built by order of Ogedei, son of the all-conquering Chinggis Khaan (Genghis Khan). My visit coincided with the arrival of an honoured visitor from the Tibetan exile community in India, a high-ranking Rimpoche or reincarnation of the Buddha.
