Collecting a newly-purchased Nissan Patrol 4WD truck in the coastal city of Townsville, Bill, the geologist, and I drove west, setting out west through a succession of torpid outback towns: Charters Towers, Hughenden to the bustling small city of Mt Isa, then through Camooweal and into the Barkly Tablelands region of the Northern Territory.
