Flat as a board, the northeastern city of Ferrara nonetheless wields a distinctive charm and remains delightfully untouristed. The original city walls still stand, reasonably intact, and the towering brick castle of the Este dynasty dominates the centre, alongside a Palazzo Municipale and a fine Duomo (cathedral). The wide, cobbled Corso Ercolo I d'Este runs north through a quarter laid out deliberately by one of the Este dukes, passing such gems as the Palazzo dei Diamante, the Palace of Diamonds. One might easily be in some once-grand city somewhere in South America.
