Our July 2018 home exchange in Switzerland saw us settled in the Lötschental, a rather remote alpine valley in the southern canton of Valais (Wallis). A dramatic ride on the car transport train through the Lötschberg Tunnel, a 20-minute journey from Goppenstein to Kanderstag, enabled road and rail access to the Bernese Oberland and northern Switzerland. We took the opportunity to visit the old-world mountain resort of Kandersteg, plus the cities of Thun, Interlaken and (later) Berne, envying many of the locals as they leapt into the icy waters of the Aare on these hot summer days.
