Portland's Peninsula

The Portland, OR area has some wierd geography! Two major rivers, the Columbia and the Williamette, pass through the area and converge just northwest of the city. The area around this convergence has islands and wetlands and lakes all meshing together.

The two rivers converge at a point, with a pleasant park called, appropriately, Kelley Point Park perched at the tip.

Leading up to this tip is a designated wildlife refuge called Smith and Bybee Lakes Wildlife Area. This area has these two lakes, but is also covered with woods and wetlands with numerous ponds and marshes scattered around.

There are a few trails with viewing points that offer the possibility of spotting wildlife; I spent a couple of hours exploring, saw some Great Blue Heron and a family of otters. You can also launch canoes/kayaks into Smith Lake, which I plan to do!
