Back to Critter Lake to try out more telephoto options/optics. Having sold my EF 300mm f/2.8 IS lens (one of the sharpest lenses around) to put food on the table, I decided to see how far I could push my 100-400 lens by putting a 1.4x teleconverter on it with my 1D Mk III body. I went out in the late afternoon, which meant using ISO speeds ranging from 1600 to 3200, so this was really pushing things. I was risking soft, noisy images, both of which are banes to me!

All in all, I'd say I was satisfied with the outcome. In other words, the images may not be National Geographic quality, but I did get a number of keepers as far as "acceptable sharpness" goes, and because of the long (560mm) telephoto reach, I don't need to crop closely and so the noise isn't terrible.

So, maybe I'm deceiving myself, or maybe this will become my preferred setup for wildlife until I have the finances to spring for the 500mm or 600mm which I really want!
