The castle was constructed in different building phases and has thus acquired its current appearance over the course of nine centuries.
The first phase of the building complex took place in the 11th century, whilst the South Palace was reconstructed in the 12th century
with an additional storey, and further extensions in the 13th century. Some of the most decisive alterations
were carried out in the 19th and 20th centuries.
