Porta Nigra at Christmas Time

Trier, Germany

One of the very few Christmas Markets still open under strict COVID restrictions in
the area is in Trier. The old city of Trier is an easy 1 hour drive from home.

The Porta Nigra is a large Roman city gate in Trier, Germany. It is today the largest Roman city gate
north of the Alps. Built between 186 and 200 AD. Wikipedia

Very cool thing to see and very well photographed, of course. I had no idea there were Roman ruins like this in Germany. ~BV~

And not a soul to be seen! I remember this with summer crowds, always a spectacle, but so perfect standing alone. Beautifully composed Tom. v

A beautiful Christmas setting for this old gate. We visited Trier as we rode out bikes along the Moselle river.

the present colouring certainly suits the name..it looks a real stronghold, well set up for defense...antiquity comes alive here, and is well shown too.

An impressive structure. "V" Is it against the rules to give it a gentle sand blasting?

It sure looks like it has seen a century or two with those weathered surfaces. 'Tis a startling edifice that seems out of place cf your other German landscapes.
