The house at 99 Repulse Bay Road was rebuilt and named "Middlespur" by Mary and Robert Ketterer in the 1960s-70s; Mary was the daughter of Sir Robert HoTung (Comparador to Jardine Matheson). I was married in Middlespur in 1977, and was told years later by Ketterer offspring, that their parents had sold the house to Sally Aw Sian (Chairman / Director of Sing Tao newspapers and adopted daughter of Haw Par / Tiger Balm magnet, Aw Boon-Haw), who later re-sold it to Lee Kum Kee.

In 1978, I moved to Singapore, and - from then onward - I have no direct personal knowledge...so the chronology after 1978 should be regarded as "heresay evidence."

If you look at the street view of 99 Repulse Bay Road on google map, you will see a man weaing uniform is watering the plants. The logo at the back on his jacket is that of "Lee Kum Kee". I then googled again, a Chinese website carries a report in 2004 listing this house No. 8 in "Top 10 luxury house in HK". The house is owned by the Lee family of Lee Kum Kee and its area is 17,500 square feet. The estimated value is HK$1.6 billion.

The Lee family still lives at 99 Repulse Bay Rd.

@ Franke Fittante

Frank, the home used in Soldier of Fortune was called "King Yin Lei" and is located at 45 Stubbs Road. It was nearly demolished a while back by a new owner but thankfully, the Govt were pressured into saving it and have been restoring it to its former glory.

Can't be sure anymore, but do you remember there was a home on the Hong Kong side that was used in the Movie with Clark Gable called Soldier of Fortune. I took some photos of the house and their on the old super 8 film, need to get it transfered over.

Tom, I am curious as to why you would blow up this particular villa signs.. is of any significance or just very random?

I think that C has nailed it. I was right about the "Kui" and the "Lok" that C is talking about is the character for "deer", I believe. I can see the vague stylisation from the photo above. So 99 Repulse Bay Road it must be. A quick GoogleEarth check has told me that the mountain in the background is probably Nam Long Shan - which these days has the Ocean Park Cable car going up the side.

The Chinese characters did not display well in my previous message... One more try: 鉅鹿

I believe the two Chinese characters (read from right to left, which is the traditional way) are ¹d³À. Looking at a 2005 map, there is a "Kui Lok Villa" at 99 Repulse Bay Road, Hong Kong. "Kui Lok" (spelled "Julu" in Mandarin) is an ancient placename in present-day Pingxiang County, Hebei Province, China. The house used to be owned by the Lee Kum Kee family (maker of Chinese sauces) but there are rumours that the film star Jackie Chan now lives there.

I am thinking that the first character is a surname, no one seems to be sure what it is, perhaps Liu (Liao) or Ying. Makes sense if it was a family name if the second character is geui (probably written as Kui in 1966 HK). Sorry can't be of more help.

Actually, the character on the right isn't the one for road, it looks more like 'geui' which means "tycoon" or "great man". I still can't make out the left hand character. It is actually more discernable in the original resolution.

Thanks Tom, I just thought it may have been a bit clearer. There are two Chinese Charaters written on this plaque. The 2nd looks like the charater for Road. Maybe someone can help. Yes, there were nice houses overlooking Repulse Bay.
