The Star Ferry

... now a part of history. This was the most popular way of traveling between the mainland (Kowloon) and Victoria Island. First class (upper deck)cost me about $.05 as I recall ... whereas the lower deck (coach class?) was about $.02 cents. Note the aircraft carrier in the background.

Brilliant, a world of its own. i worked for the Star Ferry Co from 1961 to 1971.
it was vitually the only way to cross from HK to Kowloon in those days except for the walla wallas. Yoy could swim across once a year by entering the cross harbour race.
Wonderful memories but unfortunately fading fast.

Leo, i think you mean... guess my job :-)

What a superb shot of a Legendary service by this old work horse, till date doing it's rounds but these days mainly for tourists and not for commuting, as it is no longer practical to walk half way across to Kowloon(on Hong Kong side) to catch this ferry to go to ...Kowloon?!

It was a tragedy, the day they thought to demolish the old Star Ferry Pier on the island and even worse when they actually did it despite heavy opposition.

at those days of those years, star ferry was my main travelling way...I'd to hurried to the island before mid-night and stayed in the streets of the Central till dawn...and hurried back to the peninsular by wala-wala before 6AM....guest my job....

First class, upper, was 20 HK cents for adults. Second class below, 10 cents. Kids 12 and under half price. First class had seat backs. Second class only benches.

When I was little (back in the 60's), First class was HK$.20 and HK$.10 down-stairs. Two days ago, it was HK$2.00 up-stairs and down-stairs was closed.

A living legend... Still in service..
An Icon of HK... I think it cost around HK 8dlls... Not sure... But it's less than a US 1dll
