Previously known as the two separate cities of Port Arthur and Fort William, Thunder Bay Ontario has an inseparable link to Canadian Prairies. Since the turn of 1900's, grain grown in Western Canada has been shipped to Port Arthur and Fort William and loaded on to lake boats and ocean going freighters, and exported to all over the world.
Almost every major grain handling company that has operated in Western Canada has had a port at Thunder Bay at one point in time. Some grain companies even have their own ships, and shipping lines. Millions of bushels of grain have loaded on to boats, and shipped across Lake Superior, some of which that is bound for mills in Eastern Canada, the rest bound for far off lands.
Many of companies that built the terminals are gone, so are some of the original terminals.
Through my work I was able to get a tour of one the terminals on a day it was loading a ship. So I feel very lucky to be able to share some of the images I have. As I feel I was very lucky to able to capture them in the first place..
What a terrific essay. You did a superb job shooting around the Thunder Bay area. You should feel proud that you got these shots. All are so excellent. The exposure is fantastic. Thank you for putting them here on Pbase. Great work. V.
