During the Second World War, Paterson offered 20 ships to the Canadian Government for use in the war effort.
Hauling, mainly bauxite from British Guiana to the United States.
Other ships of Paterson's fleet were used in cross Atlantic convoys to Britain and the also the D-Day landings.
Of the 20 ships sent over, 15 ships were sunk and 58 Paterson sailors never came home.
