Hawk or Falcon? Why, neither, naturally, it is a Shrike.

High Desert of California

At first I had no idea what this was, then I believed it was a juvenile Prairie Falcon, but several people corrected me, and I now believe the correct identification of this bird is a Loggerhead Shrike.

I agree with the Loggerhead Shrike. I see them alot in the fields behind my house. I think they are considered a song bird, but act more like raptors. The hunt large insects, small lizards and I've read they've even been able to take down a small finch. They also impale thier victims on barbedwire.

I don't think it's either. I think it's a Loggerhead Shrike. That face screams 'shrike'!
