I usually do not leave a great deal of responses, however after browsing a few of the responses here Beetles - Coleoptera Photo Gallery by Tom Murray at pbase.com. I actually do have 2 questions for you if you don't mind. Nov 25 2017 a beetle that looks like it might be a longhorn or sawyer beetle crawled on my hand while I was talking on the phone on my bed. It is tan, not as slender as a longhorn and it has antennae that are almost an inch long. it has white markings on its side, a few tiny splotches. I am afraid to let it outside, if it is an invasive, and definitely afraid to keep it inside!!!! Any ideas? I am in northern Vermont

MY BEETLE WAS YELLOW WITH A GOBLET MARK ON HIS SHELL AND RED ANTENNAE. THE BEETLE LAID EGGS ON MY WINDOW. eGGS STILL THERE, ABOUT SIZE OF PENCIL DOT. sOME OF THE EGGS HAVE TURNED DARK, OTHERS ARE WHITE. ABOUT 10 EGGS OR WHATEVER THEY ARE?

Oh- I almost forgot, it was round, almost perfectly circular. Smaller than a penny, about the size of the flat end of a No.2 pencil.

Hey, I found a very small black bug with 3 small yellow horizontal stripes on its back, and it was on my hand (inside my house). I am not sure if it was a beetle because it had no antenna (visible) and its head was barely visible. I am almost certain that it can fly.

about 25 years ago , I was getting my child out of the backseat from the car seat. when I lifted him out I just happened to look down on my floor-board. I was instantly scared to death. There was some sort of bug,(I believe it to be a bug), . It looked similar to a June Beetle except it was anywhere from 9-12 inches in diameter, if not larger. I somehow got it out of my car and left it up-side-down on the pavement. Later that evening my neighbor said it had looked like it made it right side up and was heading for the drainage maybe but a car ran over it, probably freaked out like me. I had never seen anything like it before and I haven't seen anything like it since. Does anyone have a clue what it may have been? I'm in Ohio

Hello. I was hoping to find the type of beetle in my home here, but it isn't. I want to know how to get rid of them. I left coffee grinds in the coffee maker for 3 or 4 days. I forgot to empty it. When I remembered, the grinds had some mold,then these beetles appeared in the grinds. I have taken the coffee apart and cleaned it, but the inner workings (where the wires are) seem to be where they are producing. I have gotten rid of the coffee maker, but now the beetles are living in my cabinets closest to the floor. They are the shape of a ground beetle, dark brown with a tan color in the center of the body. They range from very small to almost half an inch. Do you know what it may be and how to get rid of them? Thank you for your help.

I constantly photograph and identify all kinds of wildlife in my neighborhood. However, yesterday I could not identify a beetle. It was a large beetle. It has yellowish and greenish horizontal stripes with a black head. Orange front legs as well. I cannot identify this beetle. I looked through every single photograph. I'm in Virginia. Pikesville MD person, I don't know the technical name, but growing up in PG County, everyone I know calls them lightning bugs or fire flys. They're pretty common up there. =)

I have a large beetle I am unable to identify. He's about an inch long, but with a round body so he is rather tall. He has a slight bump on his forehead, so I thought stag beetle family. I can't seem to find his picture anywhere, however. If you have any ideas, I'd love to hear.

I have found a type of bug/beetle that we only find under one tree in the area. Some have been over an inch in length, very thick legs and antennas, very fast and strong legs and movements. I have some pictures , I thing of a female, not sure but it looks like and egg sack under the body. When resting in the grass, something protrudes from the back of the bug. I would very much like to send you a photo, could not even come close to the photos on the site.

they are carpet bugs. they lay their eggs in october and hatch in february or march. i think they are attracted to heat because i find them in the rooms that get sunshine most of the day. i prayed them them with flea killer and they all just dropped dead. ive found a few since then but i absolutelt gutted my house and hoovered round all the skirtings and window sills. they come in through the windows or attach themselves to your clothes. getting rid of them eventually so fingers crossed!

It appears my mother-in-law has the same insects in her home. (On the window sill in 2 bedrooms and in the carpet). They are very small and I have tried to find anything similar on th intrnet and have failed. Are they some kind of baby ladybird???

i keep finding small round brown bugs with yellow markings on their backs all over my house. cant find their picture on the web but they kind of look like carpet bugs. really creeping me out and just want to know how to get rid of them. i find them on the window ledges in bathroom, kitchen and bedroom, never seen them in my sons room or living room.

We have a nest of these red bellied bugs on one of our fences in what looks like all stages of developement. Starting at about a 1/16" to about 3/4' Once the black wings develope the undersides turns black too. The younger ones look something like a tick. Anyone know what they are?

I awoke this morning with a one ince beetle walking across my face. It has slight rolls on its body (almost like a bee) and a darker diamond on it's back, but the thorax is more flat than round. It's mostly brown, yellowish belly, and large bands on the rear legs that resemble leggings rolled down about half way to the first joint, which is backward like a crickets, but this one doesn't jump. It has nearly 1/2" antennae. Can you identify this bug and tell me if I should release it, kill it, or take it to my leader?

We have large tree down our driveway. Attached to the branches there are beetles covered with translucent slime and with the beetles are little white worms in the slime. The slime rains down onto the driveway, so we avoid walking under the trees. Can someone tell me what they are?Olivia

I watched a ground beetle struggle while trying to give birth, it seemed! She kept laying on her back, and SOMETHING was coming out of her end, then going back in... She'd move her legs a bit, then it would appear. Then back in...I swear it looked like an insect! I mid-wived for about 2 hours, to no avail. This morning, she's gone. Please advise.....

I was camping in western Michigan and saw a beetle (in a sink)that was incredibly beautiful. I didn't have a camera. It was very round and 1/2"-3/4" (I think). The body was a beautiful pearly gray. The head was a metallic green to yellow depending on the light. The legs were a shiny copper with black. Can anyone identify it?

I've been trying to identify a beetle in my chinese medicine herb mixture that is more round than oval, has a large abdomen, very small thorax and head and the markings on the abdomen are horizontal rectangles instead of vertical lines like all the other beetle pics i've seen. Can you help me?

can someone help me to identify a huge black beetle that we found inside our log home. It must be at least 1" long and it is solid black, but the top of the shell squares off at the bottom and right here is where there is four red marks as well as on either side of his back at the half way mark. Hope someone can tell me what and where this bug would come from.

Ok so I'm usually pretty good at identifying beetles and such but this one caught my eye, and it's completely bizarre. He has a narrow shaped body almost like a water beetle but his front two legs extend in front of him inward instead of outward like a normal water beetle would. He is a dark brown with a light brown belly and little black spots on his underside. Large beady eyes, no antennae. And his mouth looks like that of a weevil but a bit longer. I really want to know what this is can anyone help me? I can send you pictures via email.

At 'insects.org', if you click on the 'Entophiles' icon, there is a photo next to the 'Beetles' icon. It looks like a large insect I saw twice at work. It flew into our shop and scared the heck out of us. It was about 4" long. None of us can figure it out. My guess was an alien life form. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Matt

MY HUSBAND FOUND A BEETLE AT WORK AND HE HAS NEVER SEEN THIS TYPE AND COLOR OF BEETLE BEFORE, IT IS A LITTLE BIT BIGGER THAN A HALF DOLLAR, IT IS GREY WITH BLACKISH BROWN SPOTS AND HAS A HORN COMMING OUT OF HIS NOSE AND ONE COMMING OUT OF THE TOP OF HIS BACK. I found a striking, solid metallic gold, insect a plant in my yard in Wisconsin. It was just shy of a cm long, appeared to be shaped like a coleoptera or pentatomidae. I went to get my camera and it had disappeared. Any ideas?

hi, i have been finding some type of beetle in our apartment home...it is black with brown legs..i live in central ohio. I see them outside, but they are coming into our home, one night my dogs knocked over their food back and when I went to clean it up there were about 8 of these beetles that ran and scattered...have you heard of anything like this in my area, my husband has one in a baggy we are going to take to the apartment office, but I would like to know what is causing them to come into our home.

I found a semi large dead beetle about 2.5 inches long in my pool filter. Its head was really small and it hd vertical stripes down its back and sides. It was a pretty dark brown with a red bottom. Thanks so much email me if you know anything! :D

Dear Tom, we have a huge maple tree that has started to develop what looks like a disease. We are trying to treat the tree but I have noticed 2 different bugs on the tree and have been searching photos of beetles. They are the same in size and shape but one is all green with faint black spots near the head ans slightly yellow horizontal striping on the body. The other one is black or very dark brown with mostly yellow body with a black or doark brown scetion in the center. There is a faint orange color near the head. I would love to know what they are and if this is causing the tree disease. I have captured one of each in ziploc bags and could send a photo to you if that would help. Please let me know. Thanks.

Dear Tom I recently have moved and we have a bug which I guess is a checkered beetle. It looks like an ant but has a solid red body with black legs and antennas. Its wings are black with white stripes. Would like to know if they are harmful to my kids or my home. Thanks

I live in Arctic Alaska up in the northern region in the arctic circle. I have dicovered a beetle as what our local school teacher says here in our village. And It is also spring just about over with winter. I was curious of the bug because it sure didn't look like a house fly,if it wasn't for my 7 year old daughter we would have live them, with her good eyes she found it so tiny like the size of a 'beed' was found on the window sille and looked like a small and tiny cockroach. Although our local school teacher is doing a research on it right now! lol kind of funny to find different insects way up here esp. here in the arctic.

I am doing an essay on aquatic animals and came accross the whirligig beetle that can live in and out of water, but can't find any info on how marine beetles evolved. i have found a beetle in my backyard that does not match any of the pictures you have though your pics are amazing.its about 1.5 inches long and its solid black legs and all.its body looks like the shape of a roaches but its shell doesnt seem to be in sections, just one big shell.do you have any clue what this is?

I usually could care less about bugs i dont hate em dont like em but i saw the nicest bug of my life today.i was looking at my sugar cane and saw a small black beetle about half a centimeter with 4-6 spots that changed every color of the rainbow.i tried to catch it but if flew away.....its not your basic shiny green beetle this one was beautiful .

Hi, I am trying to identify some beetles that have been all of a sudden showing up all over the house, and its winter in columbia county ny! They are all slowly curling up and dying, and we have no idea where they're coming from and what they are. They have long antenna, small pointy head...they look a little like old house bores, but their head seems pointier and their wings have more decorative markings. they are brownish/drk gray in color They are about 1" long. Any suggestions?

Thank you so much for all those beetle pictures you posted on your website. I tried seaching for over an hour in search of brown beetles I have found in my house in Dutchess County. No luck. Just one or two pictures. They fly with a loud noise. I hope to take a picture and hope that you might identify it. We have been letting them out of the house but worry now if that is a good idea. I didn't know beetles could bite and damage wood. I have wood floors. So far okay. Hope to stay that way. And no bites. Thank you again.

Actually, I'm thinking that it might be a beetle but, upon browsing so much, I was not able to see anything that look like my beetle. Just found a Megalodacne 2cm long or as listed here Carrion Beetle Silphidae in the kitchen, must have comein the open door.We have a few fungi feats in the lawn and rotting branches used for the borders.It is covered in tiny orange babies from underside.Most odd,kids fascinated.Back to the garden for the lot of them- kids included!!! Great gallery. I'm a writer and needed to identify an insect I had seen and was planning to use in a story. It was a welcome relief (and a sad commentary on our times) to find at least one site featuring beetles. Search engines kept redirecting me to Beatles' photo galleries! It's good to find someone with interests outside pop culture!

Yesterday, as we were burning slash from cutting firewood in our Tamarack and fir trees, we were attacked by buzz-bombing flying beetles who seemed to congregate in the smoke of the fire...they landed all over us, and their bite was like a hot ember had landed on us. I caught a few, and they are similar to the false metallic bark beetle, but they have light brown spots on the tops of their top set of wings. Haave you seen these? Wendy

I have just found a beetle chomping on my elm tree in the backyard. It is black, a little over 1 and a 1/2 inches long with large, strong mandibles. It had bored into the wood and was chomping its way back out, or so it appeared. I can not seem to match it up to any of the descriptions/pictures I have seen. I live in southeast texas.

We recently came across a beetle in our local village but cannot find a picture of it anywhere. It was about 3cms long,with what looked like a fairly hard brown back, darker at the tip. It had a pointed 'tail'almost a cm long & brown antenna that looked like they had tiny 'hands' on the end! I took a photo on my phone but havent come across a similar picture yet. Any ideas?

I was wondering if anyone could help me identify a beetle I've found in my garden. There was two of them. They looked similar to the Delta Flower Scarab & Leaf beetle, but on each of their backs they had what looked like "white plus signs" & can't seem to find them on any site. Just curious since I've never seen a beetle like this in Arizona before. Thanks!

Can anyone recommend a photo gallery of pupae to help me identify one? I've just found a very large pupa in my garden in SE England. It's about 4 cm long and heavy. The tail end in articulated and wriggles in the heat of my hand. There is very little definition in the head end, but the whole thing is relatively smooth - no sticking-out bits like a stag beetle for example. Very dark brown in colour. - Jonathan Bates

My son and I found the coolest beetle today in Central Florida, where we live. It has a snout like your picture of the tooth-snouted weevel-beetle. But it is large, and spotted similiar to a ladybug. He might have wings. but I can't tell. He falls over onto his back easily, and cant seem to get up. I'm a photographer and would be happy to send you a photo, if you like. Have any idea what he is? Our apartment flooded a few weeks ago, carpets removed with the sub-floor now exposed with many gaping cracks. Hundreds of what initially looked like fleas, started crawling up the walls, ending up on the ceilings, apparently seeking the heat of the lights. They are also in our bedding, seeking heat? They don't seem to be doing anything harmful, but they are freaking us out. Exterminator thinks its a wood beetle. They don't seem to be eating anything that I can see. Any thoughts? Suggestions. I am vaccumming them up 3-4 times/day.

I was bitten by a beetle today i have no clue what kind, just all black it looked similar to the narrow bark beetle...it left a blister and was more painful than a fireant bite...extremely odd! I actually see them often just have never had a reason to know what kind.

we recently had to take a large water oak down in our yard. the middle was beginning to rot because of damage by hurricane katrina. inside we found a large white/clear larvae, body about one to one and a half inches. we didn't see any legs buy it did have a tail! the tail was much longer than the body. at the end of the tail was another piece a little darker in color about a quarter in long. as the body moved you could see what looked to be individual segments inside that looked like little balls. my grandmother taught and showed me many things about insects. i even had a moderate collection at one time. I have never in my life seen anything like this. Do you have any ideas as to what we found? there was probably more than one hundred of them!

I live in Wisconsin and recently just bought a house. It's only four years old but I have been finding these bugs in my bathroom and found like six of them on my bed. They are very small and are flat, with a brownish color, I have noticed two different sizes now. The last on I saw was much bigger then the rest. I don't know if it's the adult or what. I also saw one flying one day. So I now know they fly. That's really all I know about them. But I am wondering how i get rid of them and what kind of bug they are. I think it's some sort of beetle. Your help is appreciated.

I was recently bitten on the neck or stung by a large black glossy beetle. It had a shiny color almost irradescent. (like oil on water) many different colors shown through the black shell the most noticeble color was green. It seemed to have two sets of jaws, perhaps a set of mandibles and a mouth. It was bigger than my thumb. I was wandering if you could help me indentify it. It was in Mcalester Oklahoma. Thanks. sorry I don't have a picture.

A beetle has been visiting us for the last few days after our cats brought him home. I'v e attempted to release him several times in safe places but some how he finds his way back into my view! I think he maybe some kind of large feather winged beetle but I have never seen one like him in this country (Wales, U.K.) before. He has damage to his right wing that is prevented flight and he is relatively large. He is approx 3-4cm long and a beautiful magonany colour. He has feather like antennae and a lighter coloured under carriage. I am currently keeping him in a large ventilated box but I don't kmow what to do with him and how long he will live. I don't want to release him as he is damaged and I'm attached to him!

im not a bug person rely but, this morning i saw a beetle and was curious to what it was called. it was around 2 and a half to 3 centimetres in length and was black in colour with electric blue spots near its head. i have looked all over the net to find a picture of it but to no success. was wondering if u could tell me. thanks. I have these tiny bright red beetles that live together in clumps. They seem to eat the pods that fall from tress. I have ahd them since spring, but they are so bad now I cannot even go out on my deck. I have never seen them until this year. Perhaps you can help me with identifing them and a possible way to get rid of them Thanks
