This picture is so old that I am not sure on this point. But my 17-55 is an early one and up to now it has gathered some dust behind the front lens (although I do not use it very much). But I still can't see a negative effect on picture quality.
I still have my 17-40L - now getting some use on a 5D Mk II ...
