31342c - Least Bittern

Wakodahatchee Wetlands, Delray Beach, Florida

This is one of the most beautiful birds I've ever seen. At first I assumed it was the female, but after some research concluded it was the male due to the black cap and back (female is brown in those areas). In this species, it's interesting to note that both male and female feed the young. The bird was only visible for a few seconds each time it emerged to gather food for the chicks. He would come out and get food, then work his way back down to the nest, which was inside the duckweed that can be seen in the background of this photo. I was not able to get a photo of the chicks but I could see a glimpse of them them occasionally as they moved around in the nest.
