Mulberry trees line a pathway at the Monticello along the hillside where Thomas Jefferson's slave houses once stood. The foundations are still there,
and many of the trees we walk under now were already growing here during Jefferson's time. History tells the story of how Jefferson was very kind
to his slaves, and made sure that families stayed together, rather than being separated and sent to different plantations. Jefferson freed many slaves,
and ensured that all of his slaves would be free upon his death. Many stayed on and worked the plantation.
