Confederates

Franklin,TN

Carnton Plantation, owned by John McGavock, is the final home for 1496 Confederate soldiers, whose remains were gathered from several places in the Battle of Franklin, Tennessee in late November, 1864. They rest on two acres of ground on the old plantation. This begins a short series in their honor. The seven hour battle produced over 7,000 casualties.

Reminds me of the grave of the Yankee, John Mansfield, that I found recently. Two men long lost during a stupid war. Two trees growing big in the mean time. Lonely stones marking the long-ago loss.

Its hard to image the sense of loss the families on both sides must have felt. Touching
