#023 Crow v's Heron

Holyrood Park, Edinburgh

I came across this Grey Heron at Dunsapie Loch in the Centre of Edinburgh today.
While I was taking some shots this brave crow appeared on the scene, not too happy with the Heron's presence he would occaisionaly launch a peck at the Herons rear end.
The Heron just sat it out until the crow eventually gave up !

Some more shots here:

Update: After choosing this shot I took Claudia to a birthday party and while she was there I fitted in another photo session where I got some shots in the city:

other sizes: small medium original auto

haha! crows ARE really obnoxious. Cudos to the Heron for being the "bigger bird". Nice. Cindy

The crow does look a cheeky chappie. The heron is so not fazed at all. Great capture.

This is a great capture, I've never seen a Heron in real life myself. That crow looks like it's up to mischief!

Lol ... I am surprised the heron did not peck the crow back. It's amazing the dignity that some animals possess. A wonderful capture.

Thanks for stopping by my gallery and leaving a comment. I like your galleries.

This is a great shot, wonderful light too! There's a heron local to me, but it's incredibly timid and getting close is impossible! The crows round here regularly gang up on it and can often be seen chasing it round in the sky!

That crow's brave - I wouldn't wouldn't want to mess with a heron!

Lovely lighting and selective focussing!

Thanks Lee, yeh I saw your Heron and was impressed how close you must have got. I have usually found they are pretty skittish, but sometimes they seem entrenched in what they are doing, usually in winter when they have to work harder to find food.

My Answer to your Q: In America they call it the Great Blue Heron, UK we have the Grey Heron. I think they are different species but very similar (not certain though)

From the thumb I was wondering if you'd found "my" heron down the Water of Leith! It's amazing how long these guys stay still for.

Q for 10: Diff between a Grey Heron and a Great Blue Heron? I think they're the same...

Really like the warm light, excellent details and contrast between the two birds. Superb John.
