Red-masked Parakeets

This species makes up a San Francisco parrot flock celebrated in a book and a movie: The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill. The flock is flourishing in the wild; the day I took these photographs, first-year birds (without red on the head) appeared to outnumber adults in a flock of forty or more in a park near the Ferry Building on the Embarcadero, San Francisco's eastern waterfront. The species is native to Ecuador and Peru.
