Least Sandpiper

Edwards NWR, Alviso

I originally called this a juvenile, with its fresh plumage and some rufous -- though much less rufous than most juveniles. (For more plumage detail, see http://www.pbase.com/image/83817320 .) I thought any rufous meant juvenile. Mike Rogers says nope, it is an adult in prebasic molt, and points to the worn tips of some feathers, and the old tertial under a new one. Live and learn! For a real juvenile Least, see http://www.pbase.com/image/83984859 .

Whatever it is, it's definitely a neat shot at a low angle!
