Swainson's Thrush

back yard, Stanford campus

This little guy apparently flew into our glass door, and was stunned for the moment. Happy ending: it flew away a few seconds after I took this picture. First Swainson's Thrush we've seen in our yard, a migrant no doubt, and my first picture of one.

Techie note: I had my 400/5.6 and Tamron 1.4x on my 20D when I saw the bird. It was overcast and the bird was in shade, so I took the time to change to my 300/4 lens -- faster, and with IS, for the handheld quick shot. I had the aperture at f/7.1, and forgot to open it up to f/4 when I shot, so I ended up with shutter speed of 1/60, a little too slow even with IS, hence a little softness in the picture from camera shake.

Canon EOS 20D ,Canon EF 300mm f/4L IS USM
