Steller's Jay

Stevens Creek Park, below the dam

I shot this picture on a cloudy morning, and my sense that -- though I like it as it is -- it would have been enlivened by some fill flash led me to get a good external flash unit (550EX) to use in my bird photography.

No extra lighting required! I saw a lot of these birds for the first time last weekend (May 2006) in the Cuyamaca Rancho State Park (just east of San Diego). All the birds we saw were extremely black on the top. Of all your pics - this is the only one that represents what we saw. The other birds you shot actually look grey on top. I had my 4 yr old daughter guard our food as I prepared the meals; otherwise these jays and/or the squirrels would've starved us.

Very nice in a natural setting with the reflection. Never have seen one of these either. A beutiful jay! Thanks for sharing.
