Common Gallinule Juveniles, cooperative rearing

Renzel Pond, Palo Alto

A juvenile, several months old, tending a recently hatched chick; the adult parent was foraging a short distance away: https://pbase.com/tgrey/image/169683401. Birds of North American Online reports that this species practices "juvenile helping, in which chicks that have reached independence remain on their natal territory to help rear successive broods;" this image seems to show an example of this phenomenon.
