Greater Sage Grouse, female

Shaffer Lek, Susanville, Lassen Co

It's all for her! Female Sage Grouse have evolved to be as inconspicuous as possible, resembling the rocks in the sage prairies where they live. By contrast, the male's flamboyant display appearance has been shaped by sexual selection -- which is to say by the choices of those dowdy hens, who are selected to choose males with gaudy features which serve as visual markers for strength and health.
