As recently as 1995, when the Birds of North America article on Common Goldeneye was written, there were no accepted reports of this hybrid in the wild. Since then, a number have been reported and photographed, and the hybrid is recognized by eBird. At least one commentator suggested that the goldeneye side of this hybrid may itself be a hybrid of Common and Barrow's Goldeneye.
