American Wigeon, male

Colusa NWR

The iridescence on the head showed a purplish red rather than the usual green on this male American Wigeon -- a possible indicator of hybridization with a Eurasian Wigeon somewhere in the duck's ancestry. The bird otherwise shows orthodox American Wigeon plumage.
