Sooty Shearwaters, flying

Salinas State Beach

In the three days we stayed in our friends' beachside house at Monterey Dunes Colony south of Moss Landing, we saw an immense flock of Sooty Shearwaters fly steadily by at least twice each afternoon. They passed very close offshore, just beyond the breakers, as this picture shows. In other visits, we have seen Sooties in a feeding frenzy here, but this time they just flew by, in a line that went on and on.
