DO NOT CROSS POLICE LINE

Lake Hawkins, TX

We headed out to the lake to watch the fireworks over Lake Hawkins. We got there and then no more than 10 minutes later someone had drowned. A 29-30 year old man who did not know how to swim and was drinking heavily ended up drowning. They brought in 4 divers and found him about 30 minutes into the search. We all moved back from the area but there were some that took their kids up to the top of the hill when they were pulling the body from the water. I couldn't believe it. How could you take your children to see that. The police were insistant to move them off the hill. Children should not be allowed to see that. And, I didn't take any pictures of that happening as I had more respect for his family than to do that. Wasn't the right thing to do. And, there was one woman who went all the way to the coroner's van to get a look. Unbelieveable. I DID get a picture of her when she walked past me. A day of celebration turned out to be a day of tragedy for one family.

My best camera bit the dust tonight. The shutter is like twisted inside. Don't know how that happened so I guess it will be going into the shop. I first got upset and then thought of the man they just pulled from the lake and my issue didn't see so bad. I'll get the camera fixed and back into my hands but his family won't be getting him back.

Holidays always bring about reckless behaviour and tragedy. Wish people would learn to celebrate in moderation. I'm sorry for his family... but it sounds like he did something stupid and got called for it.

Thanks for posting this. We too were at Lake Hawkins for the fireworks. We didn't know what happened, but some of our party came back from a boat ride and said that someone was on the beach covered with a towel. They had heard the coroner was on the way, and advised us not to continue down the road we were about to drive on to get to the dam.

How sad indeed for the family. I couldn't help but think of their loss during the fireworks show as everyone else was celebrating the 4th of July and our freedom.

We were right there on the left side of the beach area next to the retaining wall when the Vol Fire Dept first showed up to make everyone get out of the water. When we finally found out someone had drown, we loaded up and went home. I didn't need my 3 children seeing them pull the guy out, curriosity or not.

Wow- what an ending to the day. I'm so sorry that it occurred, but very glad that you and yours were not involved in it. This is a great photo, too.

Hey Cindi,
This is great photojournalism. What a sad thing to happen.

Sad but unfortunately it happens way too often when people do not act responsibly.

I totally agree with you, Cindi!. Drownings under the influence of drink are on the increase here :-(

Such a tragedy, how horrible for the family. Hopefully you sharing this story with everyone will hit home that we are not invincible and really must be more careful with our precious lives!
