The tiny flies that cause this growth on willows are seldom seen even though the galls are quite obvious.

I love this insect's scientific name, which literally means "eater of pinecone-shaped tumors" (rhabdo=tumor, phaga=eating, strobiloides=shaped like a pine cone.
