Crabro latipes - Square-headed Wasp male 2a.jpg

Males of the genus Crabro have large, plate-like expansions on the front legs. These are used to cover the eyes of the females when attempting mating. Evidently this is not used to prevent the female from seeing, but rather allows the females to "evaluate" the males by the pattern of light that shines through these expansions.
