Hello Kes, are you sure that it was a butchery and not a bakery? This is a flour sifter. A fine mesh should go around the wooden bars and that sifts the flour into different gradations. You could always convert it into a bar. That is what we did.
I am not sure how smoking would work but you may be right. There were no signs of burning though but that blow thing on the top did give us that impression as well. Mind you, I did not really know that fire and wood mixed well other than fire eats wood. This cupboard is in perfect nick.
