Southwest Cemeteries

The Sacred and the Profane

Given the strong traditional Catholic heritage of New Mexico and the greater Southwest, it is no surprise that many of the images and artifacts associated with cemeteries are 'sacred' in nature -- statues of the Virgin Mary or Our Lady of Guadalupe or the sacred heart of Jesus for example. Or the American flag as a symbol of pride in country and military service. But many of the memorials are also 'profane' or secular in nature and sometimes include a biography that provides us with a glimpse of the life of the deceased. So in addition to religious sentiments we see automobiles and motorcycles, stuffed animals, the Dallas Cowboys, a life as an outlaw, or the story of an Arizona woman who met her husband when she left home to work in a wartime factory in California. Cemeteries can provide us with an insight into the lives of actual people as well as the cultural history of a community -- 'precious are the memories'
