The Meskel Festival is celebrated each September. It is a celebration of finding the "true cross" that Jesus was crucified on. Celebrations are held in each town. It is believed that Queen Eleni had a dream that she should build a huge fire and the smoke would land where the true cross was buried. The people of Jerusalem were told to make a huge pile of wood; frankincense was added and the fire lit. The smoke landed exactly in the spot where the cross was buried.
