KVLY and KXJB Towers

KVLY stands 2,063', KXJB is 2,060'. They can be seen for at least 20 miles across the prairie. I had to take out the "tallest manmade objects on Earth tagline" at last. The Burj Dubai has rendered them short and unimpressive :-).

I worked at the KXJB tower from 1980-1993. I lived in galesburg, just west of the tower and often when driving out to the tower would see the moon near the tower. I always wanted to stop along the road and catch a picture of the moon on top of the tower, but never did. When they rebuilt this tower the first time, it was to be rebuilt at 2070' which would have made it the tallest structure, but the FAA made them keep it at the original height (2060)The engineering drawings have it at 2070' with the extra 10' erased out.

Awesome! Are there any other client antennas on the tower, besides the TV station? Like a ham radio repeater, or cell-phone,etc?

I moved to a farm just to the SW of this magnificent structure, right at the time it was being finished...Cars and spectators up and down the gravel road with binoculars and spotting scopes watching as it was being constructed...When I got older and played in band at Clifford-Galesburg HS..we use to celebrate KTHI (The old call letters before KVLY)Days in Mayville ND and they would crown a Queen and her name was Katie High...Used to watch lightning strike it during thunderstorms from long ways off and in the spring time you could hear the massive chunks of ice falling off the upper portion...Just was up to the farmsted this last w/e (11/15/08) and it is still standing magnificently..

In 1981 I had the pleasure to visit the top of the KTHI (KVLY) tower. It was November. The first night I went up and inspected the antenna and changed the top light. The antenna is 130' tall, above the top guy wires, 4' in diameter. To climb the antenna to the top platform, there is a offset 3" pipe with pegs that one steps on. The chief engineer for the site told they have had problems with those pegs so be carefull!!! I checked every one twice before moving up the mast. 2,000' up leaves little room for error.
The next day I went up and did a mechanical inspection of the tower for an engineering firm. The wind was roaring and the tower was vibrating in the gusts. You can see the curve of the earth above 1,200'.
What a trip. Mind if I use your photos in a talk I am giving?

I took a road trip from Minneapolis to visit the KVLY tower (300mi). I could easily see the tower from Hwy 29 @ Alton ND (13 miles) You can drive right up to the building at the base. I didn't walk around the building to the tower. There was a maintenance worker's car parked nearby. I got dizzy looking up at the tower and could hear the steady ND wind howling through the tower!! In retrospect I should have spent a little more time absorbing the significance of what I was seeing, rather than snapping cellphone photos...

Incredable pictures, I'm 16 and this summer i plan on taking a road trip to see them. I have talked to a few people from blanchard and they say there huge too. i also cant wait to see the town of blanchard, i hear its really small, it seems so funny that people actually live there. anyways, great pictures.
