Leo 1

Cootamundra, NSW

To the south (below) of the bright star, Regulus is the faint Dwarf Eliptical Galaxy, Leo 1, it shines at a magnitude of 11.20(B) and is some 11.00 x 7.9 arc minutes in size. It is also known as MGC 2-26-27, UGC 5470 or PGC 29488. Due to the overpowering glare of Regulus, magnitude 1.35, this image has had to be stretched to bring this very faint galaxy into view.

The background also contains numerous small and faint galaxies including IC 591 to the left of Leo 1, this faint galaxy shines at magnitude 14.40(B), slightly above this galaxy is the much fainter LEDA 213668, magnitude 16.80(B). MGC 2-26-29, shining at magnitude 15.30(B) to right of Regulus, MGC 2-26-23, magnitude 15.70(B) is to the far left. Directly below Leo 1 is PGC 29497, magnitude 15.50(B). Above Regulus in the 1 o'clock position is another galaxy, PGC 29523, shining at magnitude 15.80(B), immediately to the left of the star is another galaxy, LEDA 1401469, shining at magnitude 17.10(B), a very faint face on galaxy.

John, Do you use a mask for the difraction spikes or is there a software program that generates them? For some images I think they look good. Thanks for all of your images.
