M 46 or NGC 2437

Cootamundra

M 46 is a bright Open Cluster in the Constellation of Puppis in the southern skies. This Open Cluster shines at a magnitude of 6.60 and is some 20 arc minutes in diameter, it is also known as NGC 2437, Collinder 159, Melotte 75, Raab 62 and OCL 601. Plainly visible is the Planetary Nebula NGC 2438 shining at magnitude 11.0 and some 1.1 arc minutes in diameter. Faintly visible about halfway to the left and slightly below center is another Planetary Nebula, M 1-18 or PK 231-4.1 shining faintly at magnitude 14.40 and only 33 arc seconds in diameter, it is a ghostly, faint, grey ring, no central star is visible (it shines at mag. 19.1).
