Birrens Roman Fort, the north gateway and road, looking south

Birrens,Eaglesfield,Dumfriesshire,Scotland

Whilst it may not look much now, this undulating ground is the grown over roman road approaching the north gate of the fort.Archaeological excavation has shown that where the road entered the ditch defences it was wide enough for 6 soldiers to march side by side, but by the time the road entered the fort,it was only wide enough for just about 4 soldiers.A clever ploy by the Romans to confuse an enemy.
