Looking east across Housesteads Roman Fort.

Hadrian's Wall, Northumberland, England view map

To the left of the gate,is a broad wall section of Hadrian's Wall, forming the north wall of the Housesteads fort. But,Hadrian's Wall was laid out along the raised ground ,in bright green, immediately to the rear of the broad wall.Archaeologists say this is proof that the Wall was built first, then at a later date, it was decided to put the garrison forts,on the Wall, hence the overlap.
