Limerick, Ireland (December 2013)

Limerick is located in Munster province in the south of Ireland. It is known for the medieval St. Mary’s Cathedral and St. John’s Square, lined with Georgian townhouses. Standing along the River Shannon, is the 13th-century King John’s Castle. King John of England built the castle between 1200 and 1212 on the site of an earlier fortification. Inside there are recreations of brutal medieval weapons and excavated Viking sites, reconstructed Norman features and other artifacts. Across the medieval Thomond Bridge, on the other side of the river, the Treaty Stone marks the spot on the riverbank where the Treaty of Limerick was signed.
