Jeepneys of Manila, Philippines (September 2012)

Colorful and flamboyantly decorated jeepneys are ubiquitous in Manila, originally having been adapted for urban transportation from jeeps left over from U.S. troops after World War II. Now, they are mostly converted from trucks. They are the cheapest and most popular form of transportation in the city. Ever since a jeepney was exhibited at the Philippine pavilion at the 1964 New York World's Fair, they have been a symbol of the Philippines. A visit to Manila would not be complete without a bumpy ride on one.
