Istana Woodneuk

Brief history: Built by William Napier in 1854. Sultan Abu Bakar of Johor was given the estate in exchange for his land at Telok Blangah. He had the house re-built in 1892.

This wasn't meant to be a spook hunt, though at times I did have to have my senses at their keenest. It was a quiet, breezy day. You could almost picture what it must've been like some 100 years ago.

It must've been a magnificent place...

Update: A fire broke out some time in July '06. The extent of the damage to the upper floor was extensive and severe, causing much of the roof to collapse. Please have a look at the shots in Part 3 of this series.

As far as I can remember, the mansion in these pictures is Istana Woodneuk. I think before further research was done, not many people in ClubSnap knew the original name of the place, so for convenience it was named "Tyersall House", because it was along Tyersall Road. Initially, this album was entitled Tyersall House but I've since renamed it to Istana Woodneuk. (Unfortunately, I cannot remember the source of this information, though).

Hi there, I was curious on what I saw on Google map too and started researching on it's history -- when I found you via Clubsnap.

I like to understand more, because Tyesall House (red tiles) and Istana Woodneuk (blue tiles) are 2 different mansions altogether, but have noticed towards the end of your wonderful album, your captured a house with blue tiles but stated on Clubsnap was Tyesall House.

I thank you for clarifying in advance, it would help me alot in knowing it's history nd former glory :)

It's along Tyersall Road, next to Singapore Botanical Gardens. Do note that these photos were taken a few years back. I'm not sure if the building is still there (it should be, though), or if it's still accessible.

Where exactly is this place located ? How do you find it on Google Earth ? Thanks. Interesting read.
