Number of features to note here - Regarding Structure : The "pot belly", the "goose neck", that pale staring eye, short wing projection, stout bill, large bulky size. Regarding Plumage: 1st year, entering 2nd summer. Note feathers on back are gray. These are worn feathers (close-ups next). According to Olsen, Larson light brown and gray feathers on mantle at this stage. belly white, head bleached mostly white, darker fresh new tertials/crescents, spotting in gr. coverts, white tips to primaries, legs dark, dark/fleshy/ pinkish.

Worn gray feathers visible in the close-uyp. These are not new. Darker tertials/crescents visible . I do not think a Herring Gull shows such feathers, but they certainly are variable. Click on image to see,,,,,

check out the 2 gray feathers blown up they are frayed, old looking.

You can actually see a white tongue on P5, I do not know if this is characteristic of SBGU or not.
