Mention the "Isle of Capri" and it's hard not to start singing that old tune, evoking the romance of former times. Capri has long been the vacation spot for the rich and powerful, starting back in the times of Roman Emperors (Tiberius had a villa on the beach); there are beautiful gardens high above the sea named for Augustus Caesar. In the early 20th century the German industrialist, Krupp, vacationed there (as old photographs around the streets document), and Alex Munthe wrote his famed "Legends of San Michele" from his hilltop villa. Hollywood stars have long vacationed in Capri. Hydrofoil boats from Sorrento carry passengers across the Bay in 20 minutes, where folks are met by an array of taxis with canvas canopy tops, ready to take one up and up and up on the winding roads where splendid villas line the hillsides. A funicular carries crowds (pushing and shoving) back to sea level. Today the narrow lanes are lined with trendy and expensive shops featuring all the big names in fashion: Versace, Gucci, Bernini, Bulgari, and more.
