Flame Walk
Grand Prismatic Spring, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming
Midway Geyser Basin is an especially inspiring place.
Early European visitors called it Hell's Half Acre.
Most people photograph facing the opposite direction, but
I wanted to capture the hot water runoff channels from Grand Prismatic Spring looking like flames.
The orange colors come from trillions of thermophilic microbes.
I also wanted the human element in my composition
so I waited for visitors to traverse the boardwalk past steaming Excelsior Geyser.
Their size relays scale, the red jacket is a pop of primary color,
and the striding legs give animated motion.
